During this section, predominant themes from the rock opera are explored.
BILLY & DUH RAT GANG
Billy is introduced as a leader without any positive ambitions.
PEOPLE ALL AROUND
This song describes the overcrowded, depleted and hopeless Earth of the future. An old blues singer, who gives advise to a young Billy, embodies the misery felt by the masses.
WE DON’T WANT A WAR
During this song, Billy’s father firmly states that he does not approve of Billy’s interest in going to fight in the impending ‘robotic’ war.
In spite of Billy’s father’s admonitions, he is lured by the promises of a government recruiter, who hawks the benefits of the off-world colony life. It is at this time that Billy decides to defy his father and joins the crew of an interplanetary merchant supply/ colonization ship.
GETTING’ IT ALL IN GEAR
In this song, Billy has one last date with his steady girlfriend and says farewell to her and his old life on Earth.
Now on board a sleeper ship, Billy and the colonists are on a course toward their new lives on a distant world. As they reach their destination, they are automatically awakened and marvel at the beauty of space and the life, which awaits them.
Billy is not impressed by what he sees on the colony planet and decides to stay on the starship, seeking a new life of adventure.
Billy returns to Earth for the first time and accidentally rams the space ship into a satellite, which happened to control the warring robots on Earth, and ends the 100 years of war. He is greeted by the citizens of Earth as a hero but secretly, cannot believe his luck.
Billy decides, after his first mission in space, that he enjoys ship life. With experience, he becomes a pilot, commanding a small freighter of his own. Because of his voyages through space and time, Billy never seems to age. His reputation as a hero grows from generation to generation.
PIRATES, PLAGUES, AND NATURAL DISASTERS
Meanwhile, back on the first colony that Billy visited, the inhabitants find life to be anything but easy. This song, sung by descendents of the original colonists, describes the hardships and struggles, as equipment fails and pirates constantly raid their encampment’s dwindling supplies.
FANFARE FOR THE CONQUEROR
Billy arrives and beats the pirates. Afterwards, Billy is given a royal reception.
BILLY THE CONQUEROR
Billy’s legend has grown until he has come to believe it himself. Now, at the apex of his notoriety, Billy has become somewhat abusive of his acquaintances that put up with it as they bask in his notoriety.
Billy has saved the colony. A young, enamoured, female colonist, named, Tahla, is invited to share the pleasures of zero gravity love making, on Billy’s ship. Billy, for the first time in a long time, wants a serious relationship. However, in the back of his mind, he knows he must eventually leave and that this romance will never last.
A THOUSAND YEARS
Billy is tormented by the memory of the girl he left behind, centuries ago. He wants to stay with Tahla, who is very similar, but he knows this is impossible.
While on one of several, short missions, within the colony world’s space, an emergency calls Billy away. His quest to find a better future overpowers his desire to stay with Tahla. As fate would have it, they lose communication, and never see each other again.
Feeling a little dejected and knowing that Tahla is forever lost in the past, Billy takes a job in the profitable, yet dangerous profession of space mining.
While isolated in deep space, curious aliens, who leave little evidence behind, board Billy’s ship.
Billy wonders what he will find if he follows the alien craft’s ion trail, back to their planet. He decides to chance it, on the basis that Earth could learn from these superior beings and to satisfy his own curiosity.
Upon reaching the alien’s home world, Billy is ordered to deliver a message to Earth. "Live in peace and harmony now, or we will eliminate your species. We can start again. We have all the time in the world."
Billy explains his feelings and views about their demands and their threats and counters their threats.
On his way back to Earth, Billy wonders how Earth has changed in his absence. With his slightly revised message, he hopes to inspire the Earth he left behind.
OLDEST MAN ALIVE
Billy returns to Earth. Everything is just as bad as it was when he first left. His status as a hero is an empty reward that he no longer desires. He is viewed as an oddity by curiosity seekers.
NOW IT’S UP TO YOU
Billy explains to his fellow humans that it is they who must solve their own problems. He helps put them on the right track. This is his moment to explain why he must leave and why they must question what they’ve learned from those in power.
END OF THE UNIVERSE
Having done his duty, warning Earth, Billy sets out to find new challenges and adventures.
